Famous Yacht Races
If you mention Famous Yacht races to anyone interested in yachting they will immediately think of the Americas Cup or the Vendee Globe which are raced by the best professional sailors in the world with massive sponsorship and publicity.
However there are a number of famous Yacht Races around the world where amateurs from family groups, sailing schools, yacht clubs or corporate organizations sail their own yachts or charter yachts in competition with with the professionally crewed sponsored yachts using handicap systems which give any well sailed boat the chance to win.
The Yachts are divided into Classes according to their handicaps and type and size of yacht. Thus each yacht crew competes with yachts in their own group as well as against the whole fleet.
These offshore races are strictly controlled with regard to safety requirements and crew knowledge and experience.
The most famous or them are The Fastnet Race in UK, The Sydney to Hobart Race in Australia,The Bermuda Race from Newport Rhode Island to Bermuda and The DaGama Race now from Maputo in Mozambique to Durban South Africa to name but a few.
It is the ambition of many a person from experienced sailors to those with little or no knowledge of sailing, to participate in these events and join in the sense of achievement, pride and camaraderie that is generated by completing these races. Most in fact "go back for more" and can be found joining in the races time and time again.
Many of the Yachts have Skippers and Crews, both male and female from all walks of life using nothing but the elements to propel themselves faster or more efficiently than their opposition. An added bonus is that Yacht Races are environmentally friendly, green and do not consume fossil fuel.
You do not need to own a Yacht, have close connections with the yachting community or even be knowledgeable about sailing. All that is required is a determination to have a go, a commitment to spend some time and holiday money on the project and a new achievement could be yours.
There are many Yacht Charter Companies who own or manage suitable yachts and run well organized campaigns. All the expenses of the Yacht,Skipper, entry fees and food on board are usually included.
Prior to the race sail training weekends and Offshore races, to gain experience, are provided under the guidance of a qualified Instructor, as well as courses on safety and first aid.
It is in your hands whether to "have a go" do something you will always be proud of and meet many new friends.
